New Record Amazon Peacock Bass

World Record Peacock
Now Official! – On June 1, 2010 the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) officially certified the 28 pound Peacock Bass caught by Bill Gassmann on February 9, 2010 as the new All-Tackle World Record, according to Captain Peacock Yachts & Expeditions owners Leonardo Leao and Nasser Fraxe. Gassmann ,of Des Moines Iowa, caught the 37 -inch long with 25-inch girth, monster peacock bass aboard the Captain Peacock yacht operation while fishing in a backwater slough off the Rio Negro. The huge peacock hit his clown patterned Woodchopper and

after a furious 12 minute battle, Bill and his guide Elvis were able to land the huge fish. “We are very happy to show the fishing world our exclusive concept combining mobility, safety and first-class service and accommodations in order to create unique moments like this,” says Leonardo and Nasser. “The opportunity is for every angler, from the first-time peacock bass fisherman up to the most knowledgeable ones. Since receiving the IGFA Certificate, Gassmann has traveled to Manaus for an awards presentation from the Capt. Peacock operators and Dallas taxidermist Ron Kelly also went down to cast a mold of the world record fish. Shown in the images are (L to R) Gassmann, Kelly and Leao holding fish, Gassmann holding IGFA Certificate and Kelly holding the Record Mold after returning to the U.S.

The Amazon Peacock Bass – A True Trophy
March 31st, 2010
Many angler’s talk about “the one that got away”, but lately I have been hearing stories of 20 pounders being hauled in on the banks of the Rio Negro in the Amazonia region of Northern Brazil; and they ain’t getting away. It’s the Mighty Peacock Bass, named for its colorful appearance and largemouth bass like mouth. This fish has been beguiling fisherman from all over the world and the epicenter of its existence is in the freshwaters of the Amazon River system in northern Brazil.
Peacock bass is the common or colloquial American-English name for a species of a tropical, freshwater fish native to the Amazon River basin. They also can be found in the warm waters of many South American countries such as Columbia and Panama, parts of Southeast Asia like Malaysia and Singapore, and even in Southern Florida, Puerto Rico and Hawaii in the United States. Don’t be confused by its ‘nick’ name, Peacock Bass, these fish are actually not basses at all; they are cichlids. However, the top water action, the fight, and the fierceness one feels when they have one on the line is like a combination of the Smallmouth and Largemouth Basses commonly found in North America multiplied by ten!
There are actually 15 different species of Peacock Bass that are found in Brazil. The “speckled peacock bass” and the “Butterfly Peacock Bass” are the top prizes. They grow to be the largest, and are most valued by anglers. Some have been caught weighing up to 27 pounds! Even your common everyday catch is usually 15- 20 pounds!
Agreed by all, the best location to find these trophy Peacock Bass is in the Amazon River basin in northern Brazil. There are many guide operations and lodges operating in this region for a reason. The beauty of these outfits is they take care of everything down to the rods and tackle needed to bag a trophy Peacock. You can choose from varying degrees of luxury for your day to day accommodations. You can stay on a live-aboard river yacht that provides all the amenities of a five-star hotel while cruising the inlets, coves and lagoons by bass-boat all day catching as many Peacocks as you can handle. These sorts of trips are some of the most amazing fishing adventures one can imagine and range in cost from $3000 – $7000 depending on the outfit and amenities you choose. For all these trips, you will have to pay your own way to get to Manaus Brazil, the main city in that region; and to get back home. Once there you hook up with the outfitter group, and you are on your way to a fishing adventure of a life time.

December 11th, 2009
The “Belle” Tolls with 1619 Amazon Peacock Bass. Well, The Belle Crew couldn’t have asked for a better Start for their 2009 Season.

The numbers speaks for itself , 1619 Peacock Bass up to 24.5 LB. caught by Bob Irwin from Ocala Florida. The group of ONLY 9 anglers caught 19 over 20 LB. and 158 over 10 lb. several were in the 15- 19 LB. range. Most of the bigger Peacock ‘s were caught on the bigger top water plugs they just love the sound of those ripping props. The 3-8 Lb. peacock’s were caught on Zara Spooks jerk baits and feather jigs.

Now if this isn’t enough, at the end of everyday our Butler Harry would greet us with an ice cold Juice to quench our thirst after a hard , hot day of fishing. Only to be complemented by delicious meals prepared by Gourmet Chef Euelides with the help of our ladies Hildete & Mara who also cleans our laundry and air conditioned rooms everyday.
